Damon braces or traditional braces? A dentist explains the difference.
Many patients come to us with the same question: “Which braces are right for me?” Both traditional and Damon braces straighten teeth with brackets and a wire. The main difference is how the wire is held in place.
How traditional braces work
Traditional braces use small elastic ties, or sometimes metal ties, to hold the wire in each bracket. They are a proven, reliable option and remain a good choice for many patients.
What makes Damon braces different
Damon braces are a self-ligating system. Instead of elastic ties, each bracket has a built-in clip that holds the wire. Without ties, there are fewer parts to change at each visit and fewer places for food to collect.
Who are Damon braces suitable for?
Self-ligating braces can suit teenagers and adults with a wide range of alignment concerns. Your dentist will examine your teeth, take records and explain whether Damon or conventional braces are better suited to your case.
